All Ireland Collie & Sheepdog Society - A Rough Collie Club

AICSS (All Ireland Collie & Sheepdog Society)

The Rough Collie Breed Specialist Club

An AICSS Back to Roots Experience

What it is:

  • A special non competitive social event, to enjoy the company of each other and our dogs. Away from the ringside - but at a very special location.
  • The very precise origins of a dog breed may be open to debate and conjecture, but in the case of the Rough Collie one certainty exists.

***Virtually every collie pedigree can trace through its tail male lineage back to just one single male***

•His name – Trefoil. •The year 1873. •The breeder Mr S E Shirley (founder of the Kennel Club in London) •The place of his birth – Ireland

In 2003 the AICSS reprinted with permission the research of the late Iris Combe (Tilehouse) and in 2007 independently produced, (for the International Collie Conference in Killarney), a presentation on this historical link between Ireland and the Rough Collie

**Iris Combe’s article is available on the club website –

In 2018 we go further – we literally revisit the past and you are invited to step back in time with the current generation of Collies …

Why: Because we can! The AICSS is in the unique position to reclaim this important piece of breed history

The Shirley family have graciously granted exclusive access to their private family estate for the membership of the AICSS

The event will, 145 years after his birth, bring together descendants of Trefoil right in the place where he was born

Where: The birthplace of this “father of the breed” – the Shirley Estate, Lough Fea, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, Ireland.

    When: Sunday 23rd September 2018

A Photographer will be present to record for posterity this special event and your participation in it

Bring a picnic. If it rains we’ll have the club tents

The AICSS respectfully asks that participants refrain from posting photos on social media until after the official club photos have been launched. The official AICSS photos will be free to share and tag and print.
